Well, the concept of having a "first date" is a totally American concept anyway. In Europe, you don't have that silly formalized match-making behavior as in the U.S. of which the only purpose is to make a good "deal". Things are much more relaxed and easy-going over here. You don't meet people for mating or by any other purpose. You just happen to run into them at a party, in a club or at a bar. And if there's mutual interest, it all takes the natural way. I really wouldn't want to go back to the uptight American idea of societal status. It's rubbish. And it really doesn't make any difference whether this rubbish happens in real life or on facebook. It's in the mind and that's where it hurts free society.

While I hear this all the time, I just don't buy it. I've a few long term relationships and my facebook profile has nothing to suggest any possible connection with those women I've been with.
Indeed, the difference between me and one of my ex was the fun of it. We get to learn from each other even though we're on opposite ends in movies, culture, socio-economic background and politics (I'm more inclined with Republicans and she with Kucinich).
So while I scoff at anyone who hasn't read Marcus Aurelius' Meditations or Omnivore's Dilemma - I've realized that those commonalities countless in actual long-term relationships than I thought.
